Some reports in the press this week about Scotland and the renewable energy sector, with Alex Salmond saying we are at a “turning point in human history”, and predicting that sixty thousand jobs will be created over time in the sector.

The Guardian (reporting from the Scottish Low Carbon Investment conference) has the news that Alex Salmond now believes that Scotland’s energy – all of it – could come from green sources by 2025. Which amounts to a pretty big ambition, given that we were previously targetting half of Scotland’s electricity from renewable sources by 2020. This has now been made to an incredible 80%.

And it’s not all Scotch Pie in the sky, either: Ian Marchant of the Scottish power company SSE (owners of Scottish Hydro) says in the same report that the original 50% target was going to be a “slam-dunk” and that a more challenging target was welcome.
